Avoiding open-heart surgery with a valve implant

Kathy Bruce’s life was in jeopardy when one of her heart valves was failing. Fortunately, the implantation of a valve from a cow allowed her to avoid a fifth open-heart surgery. Bruce and Farhouch Berdjis, M.D., director of the Adult Congenital Heart Program at St. Joseph Hospital, discuss the procedure that saved her life.
